چکیده

Rhinoceros beetles of the species Oryctes boas and O. monoceros were used in this investigation. Both species are large, weighing about 3*5 g and having a wing span of about 10 cm. There appears to be no difference in the flight motors of the two species. The beetles are common in sugar-cane fields and in well-established compost and manure heaps in Natal. The animals were kept in compost in metal bins in the laboratory at a temperature of about 25 °C.

Migratory directions of free-flying birds versus orientation in registration cages.

Good conditions for migration may promote offshore flights in nocturnal autumn migrants at the northern border of the Mediterranean Sea, whereas unfavourable conditions may induce flights along the coast. These predictions were tested by performing orientation cage experiments and making simultaneous observations of free-flying birds using a tracking radar. The flight directions of free-flying ...

Flight behavior of the rhinoceros beetle Trypoxylus dichotomus during electrical nerve stimulation.

Neuronal stimulation is an intricate part of understanding insect flight behavior and control insect itself. In this study, we investigated the effects of electrical pulses applied to the brain and basalar muscle of the rhinoceros beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus). To understand specific neuronal stimulation mechanisms, responses and flight behavior of the beetle, four electrodes were implanted in...

Productivity changes of units: A directional measure of cost Malmquist index

This study examines the productivity changes of decision making units in situation whereinput price vectors are varying between them and inputs are heterogeneous; that is a noncompetitivemarket. We present a directional measure of cost Malmquist productivity indexwhere incorporates the decision maker's preference over productivity change over time. Asimple numerical example is designed to illus...

CAD Modeling of Insects and Insect Flight Animation

Machines that simulate flying insects can be used to maneuver into small complex spaces. An important first step to creating insectoid flying machines is studying how an insect flies and creating a 3-D model that replicates its movements. The red milkweed beetle was chosen to be the subject because it was easy to find and capture. Live specimens were captured from the wild and then, using a hig...

Drop or fly? Negative genetic correlation between death-feigning intensity and flying ability as alternative anti-predator strategies.

A prey animal may have the alternative of flying away or feigning death when it encounters predators. These alternatives have a genetic base as anti-predator strategies in the adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis. A negative genetic correlation between death-feigning intensity and flying ability was found in C. chinensis, i.e. lower flying ability is genetically connected to escaping by...
